Brewery:Â Brewery Ommegang, Copperstown, NY
Brewery Description: “High, white, fluffy summer clouds. A soft breeze through a citrus grove. A heavenly bite of orange chiffon cake. All of these come to your mind as you lift our pale golden wheat ale to your lips. It’s so soft, so light on your tongue, you think, as the tart lemon, bitter orange, and subtle spiciness of coriander arrive to round out the intriguing delicacy of this delicious ale. You smile, knowing there are five more of them in the fridge. Crafted for summer session drinking, is a traditional white ale, or witbier; pale in color, with a high, white frothy head and refreshing flavors of orange, lemon, coriander, and wheat. Witte is also Brewery Ommegang’s first ale to be offered on draft.”
Brew Style: Witbier, 5.10%
Recommended Glassware: Pint, Tumbler, Weizen, Stein
The Ugly Truth: First off, I love the Brewery Ommegang. These are the same guys behind Three Philosophers, one of the best beers I’ve ever had. Ommegang Witte poured a clean staw yellow in color, with a frothy white head that left some slight lacey traces on the glass. I thought it had a pretty clean aroma, with some of the spices and citrus coming out in the nose. The taste was clean and crisp, with a light mouthfeel to it. I thought the carbonation was kinda weak for a witbier actually. The taste, while good, didn’t really impress me much. There wasn’t much depth to it, and it seemed to be missing the spices that were present in the aroma. There was some slight citrus tartness in the aftertaste, but again it wasn’t very strong. I had this both cold from the fridge and warmed to the recommended temperature and I definitely liked it better cold from the fridge. Overall, a decent witbier just not the best I’ve ever had but worth trying.
Verdict: I’m going with a 6 out of 10, since it didn’t inspire me much.
