BostonGeek Podcast: Episode 99

“Ninety-nine red balloons go by…”

It’s episode 99, and it’s posted late. I’ve been busy, so busy. Also, Episode 100 will be delayed until next weekend, so that we have time to finish our re-tooling and bring the usual quality you expect from us.

On the Geek Top Three, domo arigato, Google Android; the Bushies want immunity for dirty telecoms and their violations of federal law; and super-fun times with illegal cell-phone jammers.

On Boston-in-Brief, Live Action Anime 2007 brought to you by MIT on November 29th and December 1st; a bunch of sub-standard bars closing in Massachusetts because of fire hazards; and on Friday November 16th, see a wonderful flute (flaut) player from the Lowell Philharmonic plays.

According to this morning’s Boston Globe, 64 of the 67 Boston bars slated to close have been either given extensions or waivers. Only three clubs were closed: Milky Way Lounge & Lanes in JP; Kay’s Oasis in Dorchester and Packy O’Connors in Roxbury.

Yeah, so you’ve gotta wonder…are those just the most egregious firetraps? Or did the owners just piss mumbles’ inspectors off?

Those listed were just in Boston-propper. It is a state law and there were many bars across the state, including a club across the street from my workplace, that did in fact close. According to the article, the ones that were given extenions were mostly just late in filing paperwork re their fire system upgrades. The waivers, as I understand it, were for clubs that are technically licensed as bars, but are generally operated in some other manner, e.g., as restaurants, or whatever.
