Brewery: Buzzards Bay Brewery, Westport, MA
Brewery Description: “This beer’s looks are deceiving! It may look like a stout, but your first sip will tell you otherwise. Brewed in the German easy-drinking tradition, our Black Lager may look dark, but it tastes clean, crisp and smooth. This beer has quickly become a staff favorite!”
Brew Style: Schwarzbier, 5.1% ABV
Recommended Glassware: Lager glass, Stein
The Ugly Truth: Is that I’ve been so busy between work and family, its been two weeks since I’ve posted a review. Just sad. Alright here we go. First off, I really enjoy schwarzbiers and this one was really good in my opinion. Poured a solid black with a light brown head to it that, like the description says, looks much like a stout. The aroma for me had notes of chocolate to it, also a hearty malt aroma. I really enjoyed the taste, which I found to be medium to heavy in body and really refreshing. I found some hints of roasted flavor, probably the malt and also some coffee. Overall, really enjoyable taste with a good clean finish. Very solid black lager. I recommend trying it out.
Verdict: I’ll go with an 8 out of 10 bottlecaps.

I had this on tap a few weeks ago, and was very happy with it. A few pints went great with some giant burgers. I definitely agree about the roasted flavor, it was almost like a smoky burnt flavor, but in a good way - like when BBQ is left on the grill *just* a bit longer and the fat gets smoky and crisp.
Exactly. I was having trouble putting it into words. I appear to have gotten rusty during my two weeks of not writing something.
Glad I could help. I’ve been beerless for nearly a month now, so I’m rusty from drinking, personally.
Poor bastard. Being beerless is the worst.
Buzzards Bay — Yet another brewery that should be sending me free beer.
Bah, you get nothing. They know whose opinion is worth its weight in gold, that’s why I get sent the beer.
Really good and really interesting post. I expect (and other readers maybe :)) new useful posts from you!
