BostonGeek Podcast: Episode 95

Bungie jumps from Microsoft, another competitor to iTunes, a Universal competitor (ha…ha), Dell gets sued for- get this- crappy customer service.

On Boston-in-Brief, a shockingly good time at the Chevy Volt press event; sweet, sweet chocolate at the Langham Hotel in Boston; and have some Cake with your chocolate.

I’m pretty sure I posted about this the last time Karl mentioned the Langham, but it needs to be said again. The chocolate buffet is phenomenal. I went to it last year as part of the Boston Chocolate Tour, and all the praise that Karl has heaped on it isn’t doing it justice. It’s definitely a bargain.

The only downside to it, is the massive crash you have about an hour after you leave.

Gentlemen, just replace your wedding rings with this:

I think you guys are arguing about two different concepts vis-a-vis warranties.

Carl is talking about ‘warranted guarantee’ which is basically “we will sell you this thing and guarantee its usability for this period of time”. This is often regulated by law and consumer protection to keep you from getting screwed by faulty products.

Colin and Karl are talking, as best I can tell, about a value-added extension of service. This is a product sold by retailers and service depots.

PS – Wow, I think it’s just wonderful that Chevy, the one-time leader in electric vehicle technology, is playing catch-up with Nissan, Toyota, Honda, Saturn and BMW… in 2010. ;)

I hope you guys have scoped out some cool Halloween events for the show. I’m sick and tired of crappy halloween in Boston. Constantly hearing “Oh, well, everyone goes to Salem anyway” is getting old. Not everyone wants to go to Salem every year just to have a fun Halloween.

You guys or any of your lovely listeners should post any cool Halloween events you find over on http://bostonfrights.com/ , an alternative to trying to find shit on sites like boston.com where it’s all fluff and toddlers. Hopefully by next year it will have a lot of listings.

That said… yeah… we’re going to Salem this year for the Hawthorne ball. But we’d glady stay in town if there were some decent haunted houses and/or costume balls.

(errr… I mean besides Spooky World, of course. but it’s a bit played out…)

I am personally looking to finally make it out to THUD! at the behest of our friend Jared Sorensen, who continues to invite me despite the fact that I am a douche who never seems to have the energy or time to engage in gothy goodness.

I’m not actually goth, mind you… more like wannabe goth. Which is sad, I suppose. Except sad is emo, and emo is not goth. However, goth + emo – the BBW crowd = hotness, and I think we all appreciate torn fishnets and pierced noses.

So yeah, no plans for Halloween, because I don’t know of any cool events or parties any of our listeners have invited us to.

  7. 7 Big Remy

Dude, you are so far removed from goth its not even funny :-)

  8. 8 Carl Reyes

Yes, well, you are far removed from anything remotely resembling civilized, but we don’t hold that against you. :)

I… uhh… really shouldn’t have fallen asleep at the end of podcast 94.
Oops. hehe You know… the part where you talk about Salem and Spooky World. hehe I just went back and listened to it.

Oh, but BTW, this is the 3rd year Spooky World has been indoors. We’ve gone the last two years. It’s OK fun but… it looks like it’s pretty much the same this year (which is OK if you haven’t been in a while). It’s very ‘carny’ feeling. Plus, if you go at the wrong time you’re constantly in the middle of a bunch of teenage southie kids acting like total dildards.

    SAD IS NOT FUCKING EMO.

For fucks sakes, why does everyone assume emo = sad boys with long bangs and eyeliner?

  11. 11 Colin

Wow. Sounds like someone’s in denial.

1 part hair, 1 part uniform dress code, 1 part “introspective” songwriting, 1 part boring composition = Emo :)

Hrm, maybe that should be 2 parts hair.

  12. 12 Carl

    SAD IS NOT FUCKING EMO.

For fucks sakes, why does everyone assume emo = sad boys with long bangs and eyeliner?

    Two words: Gerard Way

Emo might have its roots in a sub-genre of Punk with Rites of Spring (which I’ve listened to… wouldn’t exactly call it ‘Punk’), but there is no denying that the whole tortured aspect of it is the main theme. Bands from The Cure to My Chemical Romance, Soft Cell to Fugazi. All the same hair, mostly the same tortured lyrics. I wouldn’t go as far as Colin and say ‘boring’. After all, I like Emo music. I like My Chemical Romance, The Cure, Fugazi, Garbage (argaubly alt-rock, but the thematic elements are all classic Emo. “I’m only happy when it rains?” Come on).

Emo is sad. Know why? ‘Cause no one wants to hear about how pretty fucking daisies are in springtime. ;-)

  13. 13 Russtopher

I can’t believe you compared Soft Cell to Fugazi and Rites of Spring. Holy shit.

  14. 14 Big Remy

Yeah that is a pretty shitty comparison.

  15. 15 Russtopher

Next thing you know, Carl’s going to tell us that Culture Club and Boysetsfire could have been the same exact band. Pffft.

  16. 16 Carl

No, usually when you indicate a comparison, such as ‘Soft Cell’ to ‘Fugazi’, you are casting a wide net to encompass a range, especially when accopanied by other ranges.

‘Soft Cell AND Fugazi’ would have been closer to a direct packaging of the two together.

  17. 17 Carl

Also, Culture Club wasn’t Emo. It was shitty 80’s pop. Now, I like 80’s pop. Fuck it, I like Cyndi Lauper and Oingo Boingo. But Culture Club was pretty shitty. And not Emo. The only tortured things around CC were the ears of sane people.
