Riverwest Stein Beer (#98)

dscf2379.JPGBrewery: Lakefront Brewery, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Brewery Description: “The rich amber color and caramel flavor of this beer are derived from the generous amount of caramel malt in our recipe, with just a dash of roasted unmalted barley for a subtle toasted flavor in the background. The sweetness, body, and mouth feel tell you that this is an all-malt beer. The finish has a balanced edge of Willamen and Casade hoppiness which cuts through the malty character, leaving a clean palate which beckons for more. Note: the terminology of “stein” refers to the appropriate drinking vessel and not to a type of beer made with hot rocks.”

Brew Style: Vienna, 6.0% ABV

Recommended Glassware: Stein, Lager

The Ugly Truth: I’m actually not entirely sure what to say about this beer. On one hand, it didn’t jump out and grab me when I drank it. On the other hand, it was probably one of the most solid beers I’ve ever had. Color was a deep brown/amber, with a rich foamy head on it. Decent malt/hops aroma to it. The taste was pretty mild, nothing overbearing and seemed well balanced. There was a dash of hops in the taste, a bit of malt as well. The finish was very clean, with the caramel sweetness just peaking its head out at the end. Overall it was a really good solid beer. If you are looking for something with a bunch of complex flavors, I don’t think this is your best bet. If you want a solidly crafted amber lager that will satisfy without having to worry about random flavors that the brewer decided to throw in there, I think this will fit the bill for you. I would definitely give this beer a shot, and if anyone has I’d love to hear what you think of it.

Verdict: I’m a bit torn between giving it a 7 and an 8. I’ll go with the 8 out of 10 bottlecaps because I think it has wide appeal to it.
