Miller Lite (#84)

Miller LiteBrewery: Miller Brewing Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Brewery Description: Our flagship brand, Miller Lite, is the great tasting, less filling beer that defined the American light beer category in 1975. With a clear, simple message — “We have more taste and half the carbs of Bud Light” — wrapped in an engaging able challenger personality, Miller Lite once again is seen by consumers as a strong alternative to the category leader. Only Miller Lite can say, “For great taste, there’s no debate.”

Brew Style: Pale lager, 4.2% ABV

Recommended Glassware: Dimpled mug, English pint, Lager, Shaker, Stein

The Ugly Truth: Lord knows I didn’t want to drink it, but it was in my fridge leftover from a cookout and I needed a beer to review. This one is going to go a bit different, as I’m going to review as I drink. So the color for Miller Lite is actually really good, a nice golden hue with a thin head on it. The aroma actually isn’t bad either. Now for the taste…oh and it sucks. Though I will say, it is infinitely better than some of the other mass produced Pale Lagers out there. The taste is just kind of there, reveling it in flatness and water-like majesty. There is a hint of taste right at the end, but that dies quickly and actually taste quite bad towards the finish. Ah well, it had to be done.

Verdict: Hey Lite is spelled with 4 letters. Guess how many bottlecaps it gets? That’s right, 4 out of 10 bottlecaps.

I won’t lie – I almost always have a few cans or bottles of this in my fridge. Why? Good for beer baths when I grill brats. Not a bad “thirst quencher” beer after cutting the grass on a 95 degree day. Decent with pizza.

But – it is what it is. A thin, mass produced lager. There’s much worse :-)

Beer bath for brats? Sam Adams. I don’t cook with anything I won’t drink.

Even better? Boil brats in Sam Adams Boston Lager for 5 minutes, then just let them sit int he beer while you prepare a charcoal grill with wet mesquite chips on it. Now throw those still-warm brats on and cover the grill, getting some serious smoke on.

Best brat I have ever had. Ever. In my life.

Just curious… has there been a one or no bottlecap beer rating?

Eye of the Hawk and Red Tail Ale, both from Mendocino Brewing Company, received a somewhat controversial 1 bottlecap. I actually wanted to give Red Tail a negative rating but we don’t have one.

Those two are interesting cases, as I’ve seen anything from people hating it to thinking it is the best microbrew on the market.

I’m still working on a chart of some kind for quick reference to the beers I’ve reviewed, sorted by rating like you asked for. I’ll get it done someday.

Offhand, I’d say that anyone who gives Red Tail Ale one bottlecap and claims it should be negative shouldn’t be reviewing beer in the first place, since clearly they don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground.
