We really hammer home the idea that this is Episode 81. Really.

A whole crapload of Apple stuff, followed by stem cell vaginas, and the capture of one of the world’s most notorious and wanted spammers. After a rousing GameGeek Challenge, on Boston in Brief, we discuss the Phantom Gourmet BBQ and the Boston Dragon Boat Festival.

Is there any reason why you cut out all the previous week’s answers at the beginning of the GameGeek challenge?

Just to clarify a point, H.264 isn’t Apple’s thing, it’s VCEG/MPEG’s thing (hell, VCEG’s chair at the time was a Microsoft guy, which makes it hilarious when some tech sites say things like “WMV vs Apple’s H.264″). Apple is just the most vocal proponent for it as a) they’re a big mover on MPEG-4 (which H.264 is a part of) because b) they wanted a higher quality encoding scheme that could still be heavily compressed. H.264 is better than MPEG-2 at lower bitrates (MPEG-2 was outmoded almost immediately after it was adopted anyway) and is mandated for inclusion in all HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players as well as many HDTV regulations around the world.
H.264 is going to be very important for a while (we have higher definition TVs but the same amount of bandwidth for getting video information… you do the math. better yet, H.264 does the math). Apple’s just recognized and accepted this earlier than a lot of others.

To be fair, Microsoft may be, for once, ahead of the curve with HD Photo, mostly because Bill Crow and his people are genuine fucking geniuses who’ve been allowed to do something awesome and not then be smothered to death by the Microsoft legal and ass-backwards-marketing/licensing machines.

Cuz it’s commencement and slow as lava at work…

PS – I’m a staunch supporter of the EFF, but I’m with Carl on the whole embedded data thing… “So?” I mean, it’s still a purchased track, they could embed “I like monkeys” in it if they wanted to. What next? Get uptight because they embed your name and email in Address Book? On *gasp* emails?

PPS – I’m only halfway through the podcast so I reserve the right to come back and take up even more space in the comments later. ;P

PPPS – You know… if they were growing penises for guys with some similar problem you guys would be applauding and saying “well done!” LOL

  3. 3 Carl

Greg, I blame technical difficulties. And Karl. Let’s direct that question at Karl….

  4. 4 Carl

And Maggie, if they were growing penises to attach to android males, I would not be saying, “Well done!”

I’d be saying, “Crap, now my wife has no reason at all to put up with me.”

  5. 5 Russtopher

Hey, aren’t a bunch of those bands you guys are talking about on RIAA labels? ;-)

For the record, I consider myself slightly emo for being such a huge Saves The Day fan.

Well, that’s already an option as (sort of) mentioned at the end of the episode…

See, Jennifer DeSimone doesn’t need her husband anymore, either.
“I have never seen anything like this. I am amazed!”, Jennifer DeSimone, Trani customer

PS – Dammit! I just missed registering carlreyes.com and creating something heinous and wrong.

    GWAR isn’t, but…
    ….
    ….
Enya and My Chemical Romance are. ;) hehe

  8. 8 Carl

In my defense, I have owned the Enya albums since the before time, when the shadowy mists only whispered of the RIAA and Metallica was just showing us what douchebags they are.

As for My Chemical Romance… I plead the 5th on all counts and reiterate, “Fuck the RIAA.”

  9. 9 Russtopher

If Metallica had just called it quits after “Justice”, then they’d probably go down as the #1 band in the history of my world. Unfortunately, they kept going, and will go down as the #5859 band in the history of my world. But that’s another discussion for another time…

Greg – the answers were cut out because the file you gave us had only blank space where the clips were supposed to be. I would have contacted you re this but I was running very late due to another technical problem. I should have checked before hand.

Russtopher – I’m apathetic and am not in the boycott-the-riaa club. Though I don’t “get” Enya and My Chemical Romance…

  11. 11 Russtopher

I’m for good music, regardless of label (both type of music, and company releasing said music). I don’t get Enya either, although my wife does. So I asked her if she liked Yanni too. I don’t get it.
