Brewery: Bavik-De Branbandere, Harelbeke, Belgium
Brewery Description: “Top-fermented beer with a deep dark red colour. This beer ripens for 24 months in oak barrels. This gives Petrus Original (in Flanders called “Oud Bruinâ€) its vinous, noble taste and slightly sour in character. The mild alcohol content makes this beer the perfect thirst-quencher.”
Brew Style: Dark Beer/Belgian Sour Ale, 5.5%
Recommended Glassware: Snifter
The Ugly Truth: “For Boston, for Boston, we sing our proud refrain. For Boston, for Boston ’tis wisdom’s earthly fame…“. Everytime I see the word “bruin” I think of hockey and then of course I start singing “For Boston” from the Dropkick Murphys. God I want to move home. Ah well moving on. So Petrus Oud Bruin was a really good beer. It poured a nice deep brown color with a solid off white head to it. The pour went a little heavy so I had to suck some of the foam off the top and even that tasted good. The beer had this sweet malty smell to it that was really nice. As for taste, it went much the same. It had a medium body, sweet taste to it that went down very smooth. The finish was fairly mellow, with no real bitterness but this sourness that really went well with the flavors. All in all Petrus Oud Bruin was a really good beer that I definately recommend people try.
Verdict: I’m giving this beer 8 out of 10 bottlecaps, which happens to be the same number as the greatest power forward to play the game of hockey, Cam Neely. Death to Ulf Samuelsson.
