Re-vo-lu-shun!

Since Remy’s claimed dominion over beer, I suppose I better make a grab while the grabbing’s good, and start writing some sports articles. Otherwise all that’ll be left is interpretive dance and basketweaving.

So, a quick reminder to everyone that we have a soccer team we should be cheering for. A really, really good one. The Revolution are playing DC United in the Easter Conference Championship game this Sunday at 4. That makes it their 5th straight conference championship game, including trips to the MLS cup in 2002 and 2005. The first of those Cup games was attended by yours truly, Remy, and more people than had ever attended a soccer game in the US that wasn’t a World Cup game.

Wanna guess who the owner is? I’ll give you a hint: his other team will be hosting the Colts later that night. And it’s the Revs’ sustained success over the last five years that makes me really appreciate the kind of golden touch Kraft has. Want to guess their winning strategy? Strong, fast defense, and a couple of ridiculously talented scorers. Oh, and also the best goalie in the league.

I know, I know, you’d rather watch the Steelers-Broncos game. But seriously, Big Ben is just going to get pummelled, Champ is going to shut down Ward, and it’s going to be a snoozer by halftime. Once you’re good and bored, why not flip over to ESPN2 and watch the Revs stomp on DC?

Look, you want to know how much fun they are to watch? They made it to the conference finals after winning the previous round on penalty kicks. Not only did our keeper block 2 of the four shots he faced, he also took one himself and scored.

Update 11/6/06: The Revs won it 1-0 on a 4th-minute Twellman goal, and will play the San Jose Earthquake Houston Dynamo in the MLS Cup next Sunday.  ABC will carry the game, which starts at 3:30.

It was seriously like Argentina invaded Foxboro there were so many flags flying around since one of the DC UNited players was from there.

Glad to hear other people preaching the gospel. i’m a season-ticket holder, and can never understand why the games aren’t better attended sometimes, particularly last weekend’s playoff game. even with a relatively small crowd on a wretched night in the cavernous gillette stadium, there was plenty of noise.

the article a month or two ago in the globe dangling the possibility of a soccer-only stadium really got my hopes up. at the rate things are going, the revs should overtake the bruins on the local sports radar in another year or two, and deservedly.

i don’t think i’ve ever not gotten my $20 worth of entertainment at an mls match. and for the people who doubt soccer is a manly enough sport for them, they really ought to sit down and watch a revs-united match. dc, for one, plays mean soccer, and there’s every bit as much contact as in a basketball game at least.

while it’s ordinarily tempting to want to keep something good all to yourself, this is not a secret to be kept; the more fans there are, the more fun it’s going to be.

i’m still tempted to drive down to d.c. go revs!

Go Revs!! Road trip to Frisco, TX anyone? I wish they weren’t playing a Texan team for the title. I’m hoping some of Dempsey’s homeboys come out in support for the Revs.

I’m amazed at Matt Reis and his uncanny knack for stopping PKs.

MLS Cup 2002 was incredible. Definitely the best soccer atmosphere I’ve ever encountered and in the top 3 of sports games I’ve attended along with the 1980 US v. USSR hockey game, and a Giants v. Dallas football game in 1981.

Much love for the Revs – I’ve been negligent, but I got back into them this year (and what good timing!).

Let me know if you think you’ll be at some particular Boston venue to watch the MLS Cup.

Hell, I’ll be happy if the wife lets me watch it in semi-real time (Pats play at 1pm that day) instead of the 4pm football game that day. :)

Finally got a chance to catch the conference final on my tivo last night, since Juliet was keeping us awake. Great goal by Twellman, and then an amazing job weathering the United assault for the next 85 minutes. I can’t decide, though, if just weathering the assault is something to be impressed by.
