Well, the way to avoid that is to get a buffer ready before you publish any, but that doesn't really work for a sports column.

I still think you should do it. Hopefully you won't be an uninspired bitch like J and me and leave off your column after 3 or 4 half-hearted attempts.

How am I supposed to know when NPR doesn’t have the right details?

That should be your assumption until proven otherwise.

Okay, start with the basics. He never played professional basketball. He was a coach and a GM. He was, as I mentioned, the first guy to draft a black player, the first guy to field an all-black starting five (apparently because Heinsohn was injured, according to one article I read), and he was the first guy to hire a black coach in _any_ professional sport in the US. He did this not because he was a civil rights hero, just because he really wanted to win, and they gave him the best chance to do so.

He won 9 championships as a coach, 8 in a row, over a 10 year period with the Celts. He told everyone ahead of time that it was going to be his last season, taunting them that they had one last shot at him, and then he won it all one last time. He handed the coaching duties over to Russell, who was still playing at the time, and fucking Russell won it all. Red was GM for the remaining 7 championships the Celts amassed by '86.

He also ran a number of promotional tours for the State Department through Europe and Asia, with mostly Celtics-based teams. He's been involved with the NBA since it's inception, and tonight will be the first night in I want to say 57 years that he hasn't attended the Celtics home opener.

Hey now, he WAS credited as the first coach to fully integrate sprts teams, and he DID lead the Celtics to national recognition and championships... at least, that's what NPR sez. ;-)

Erm, you know that pretty much the only thing you got right about Red was his name, right? Not a huge deal, I know you're not a big sports fan.

Thanks for the "enthusiastic" plug there, Colin. :D

In all seriousness, I do appreciate the plug. I don't mind folks listening now that I've just started, tips and feedback will only help. And YES I do owe you and Carl a note of thanks, your weekly podcasts are definitely a bar that I look up to. Instead of the bar that I slide up to and order a Jameson. But I digress... great episode this week. As always.

Colin - good call on the woman from The Relic. I've never seen that movie, but I checked IMDB, and it is in fact the same woman.

And yes, I do agree that Jack Bauer is the ultimate badass.

Just to correct Colin's statement on the universal translator and Star Trek. In the Star Trek timeline, the universal translator was invented in 2151 (which is around the time that the show Star Trek: Enterprise takes place). By the time that Star Trek: TOS the universal translator was part of the ships communication system or could be used as a hand held device. In Star Trek: TNG the universal translator had become part of the communcation badges. It still didn't always work.

As for Carl's comment on Uhura not speaking Klingon I assume he's referring to the part in Star Trek VI where they were trying to sneak across the Klingon border to rescue Kirk and McCoy from Rura Penthe. They couldn't use the universal translator because it would have been recognized. That was in actually a decision on the director's part because Uhura as a communications officer would have almost surely known Klingon since they were still the Federation's primary enemy.
