Brewery: Two Brothers Brewing Company, Warrenville, Illinois

Brewery Description: “Ebel’s Weiss beer is a very traditional German Hefeweizen that is naturally unfiltered. It has wonderful malt sweetness and a soft aroma of clove, vanilla, and banana. This deep
golden colored weiss will make you think you are in Bavaria.”

Brew Style: German Hefeweizen, 4.9% ABV

Recommended Glassware: Weizen

The Ugly Truth: Why, oh why do people insist on screwing with the Bavarian goodness that is the Hefeweizen? So Ebel’s poured great, had a really really nice golden color to it. That’s where my love for the beer ended. It tasted like your fairly standard hefe weizen, but it was extremely overcarbonated. This overcarbonation killed the taste for me because the mouthfeel made me think I was drinking nothing but foam. In addition, the clove/vanilla/banana taste just didn’t work very well for me. I think the clove and vanilla by themselves would have been okay, but the banana threw it off. The finish has this really strong lemon flavor to it, which I again didn’t like. Yes, I like lemon in my hefeweizen but I want to put it in and decide how much, I don’t need you supplying it for me. In the overall, it ranks fairly low on the scale of Hefeweizens that I’ve had. I recommend trying it, because there will probably be people who like it but its just not one of my favorites.

Verdict: Come mister tally man, tally me bottle caps…day light come man and its a 5 out of 10…

Hrm, I actually liked this one. I wouldn’t say its my favorite Hefe, but I would have easily given it 2 or maybe even 3 more bottlecaps.

And that is why you don’t have this job. You would be giving inflated bottlecap ratings all the time.

It was exactly what the 5 indicates: a good beer’s bastard child. Way too much carbonation and the overly strong lemon flavor at the end was just uncalled for.
