This marks the 50th 53rd beer to be reviewed on this website by me, Big Remy. Yes, I realize there are in fact only 47 reviews posted, but the Sam Adams Brewer Patriot Pack counts as four since it was four different beers. I must say it has been fun and my liver has survived and rolled with the punches. There have been highs and lows in the beers I’ve had, but its been enjoyable in the overall. Hopefully everyone has had fun reading the reviews and if I’ve influenced someone’s drinking habits by introducing them to different brews then I’ve done my job. I’ll be posting a list of my top 5 favorites and top 5 most hated beers from the 50 53 sometime next week. So everyone raise a pint of their favorite brew and toast to the joy of beer. Remember, Ben Franklin once said “Beer is proof that God loves us and wants to us to be happy.”.

UPDATE: We have learned since this time that I can’t count past 10.

And now for the 50th review, I give you the undeniably good and cheap Schlitz!!!!!!

Brewery: Pabst Brewing Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Brewery Description: “Schlitz, long known as “The beer that made Milwaukee famous” was first brewed by Joseph Schlitz in 1849. That’s before the internal combustion engine, telephone or light bulb was invented. Schlitz was the best selling beer in the world in 1956, and although it can’t make that claim today, it is still brewed with the same great ingredients and quality that Mr. Schlitz intended. Schlitz is one of the undiscovered gems of American beer and today, young adult consumers are embracing the brew because it has stayed true to itself and hasn’t “sold out”. When you’re ready to discover something new (or old in this case), reach for a Schlitz and see what we mean when we say it’s “Just the Kiss of Hops”.”

Brew Style: Pale Lager, 4.6% ABV

Recommended Glassware: Dimpled mug, Stein, Lager, English pint, Shaker…okay seriously drink from the can preferably with a cozy (yeah Colin!!!!)

The Ugly Truth: Alright loyal readers, time for some hard truth. Schlitz is by far the greatest of the cheap beers on the market today. I paid a whole $2.50 for a six pack. I grabbed it because I was headed to a beer pong tournament a few weekends ago, and I needed something I knew I could handle drinking for cheap beer. While this was a 2 person team tournament, due to size and reputation it was determined that I was my own team and The All Powerful Yeti dominated. The Schlitz didn’t fail me. I went 3-0 in Pool Play fueled by the power of the Schlitz. I then got knocked off by two friends of mine on some extremely lucky shots in the first round, but then did well in the losers bracket. Sadly I had to leave early to so I was replaced but my presence was felt. Now, to the beer. If you go look at the various beer sites, the beer snobs are out in full effect on this one as everyone just trashes this beer left and right. Frankly, I’m sorry but again they are falling prey to their own misconceptions and hatred of beer. Schlitz is good stuff for a mass produced beer. Decent amount of body, smooth taste and yes with the perfect kiss of hops. And when your playing a furious game of beer pong against two people by yourself, the fact that it can be easily chugged makes them getting those doubles quite difficult. So frankly, the beer snobs of the world can go screw because Schlitz is a great beer.

Verdict: The power of the Schlitz commands you to recognize its 8 out of 10 bottlecaps.

OK so while picking up some holiday spirits today I happened to see a sign – $4 for a 12 pack of Schlitz. Remembering this review, I picked it up along with all the other beer and wine. I am now enjoying my first frosty Schlitz, and I’ll be damned if Remy isn’t right (imagine that, a Christmas miracle). I am shocked at how good this tastes for the dirt cheap price. And none of that “eggy” aftertaste you normally get from beer that’s favored by college freshmen who pay for their purchase in quarters (did someone say “Mickey’s Ice”??).

I bow to the beer knowledge that is Remy.

The Schlitz and I accept your worship.

My pal and I recently had a taste taste between Schlitz and PBR.

I am a tremendous Schlitz fan, but am disappointed to report PBR won.

  4. 4 Big Remy

I find that impossible to believe.

Schlitz was the first six pack I ever acquired. Actually my mom bought it for me at my request. I was 16 at the time. I believe it was $1.45 or $1.60. I really don’t recall it’s taste, although I know it didn’t hold it’s own in the beer drinking circles for long during the late 60s early 70s era. I also recall I preferred Pabst. Remy may be a corner sewer of beer but every mug has own personal taste buds.

I don’t know about the “a corner sewer of beer” but I’ll agree with you on the personal tastes part.
