Thanks to some work by Jay Carreiro, we now have the original manuscript that began the codification of Wrathful Vengeance.
Read on, True Believers!!
Since this topic had come up in recent games, I have decided that as the most frequent user and possibly the originator of Wrathful Vengeance it falls to me to answer the following:
1) What is Wrathful Vengeance?
2) What causes Wrathful Vengeance?
3) When should Wrathful Vengeance be used?
4) How does Wrathful Vengeance work?
Question 1) What is Wrathful Vengeance?
Wrathful Vengeance is the all consuming desire, nay the deep seated need to do unspeakably horrible things to another gamer’s chances of winning when said gamer has done something to utterly fuck you over for no apparent reason except sheer arrogance or just to be dick. It now becomes your job to make him burn for it and possibly eat his children, or at least his playing pieces.
Question 2) What causes Wrathful Vengeance?
As stated above, Wrathful Vengeance is caused by being screwed for no apparent reason. For example, your playing Risk 2510. Another player, let’s call him Jay, who has no business invading your soverign area of North America, especially when he has only one piece even remotely near by…decides to launch a devastating nuclear attack against you for no other reason than to be a bastard, thereby wiping out 50% of your forces there. This is a situation that calls for Wrathful Vengence. This is a proper time to declare that his entire color are spawns of the devil and should be wiped post-haste from the face of this universe.
Wrathful Vengeance can also be caused by repeated attempts by another player or sometimes players to just completely cockblock you irregardless of your chance of winning, unless you are giving them an ass whomping in which case it’s what they should be doing. If said player(s) continues such a practice, declare them bitches and invoke Wrathful Vengence or in the case of multiple persons screwing you its referred to as Blaze of Glory. This situation involves repeated offenses where there are other options open to said player(s) to do, such as repeatedly placing the robber on your sheep in Catan, when another player is becoming the next Rockafellar on his ore spot.
Question 3) When should Wrathful Vengeance be used?
Quite simply, whenever another player just pisses you off to the point of insanity by doing something he has no business doing, whether it’s a valid move or not. No one ever said Wrathful Vengeance was an objective state of mind. Wrathful Vengeance can be used to give morale to your troops, gain support from other players, or to simply wreck havoc almighty on the poor damned soul who had evoked it.
Question 4) How does Wrathful Vengeance work?
Quite possibly the most important of the questions here today. Unknown to most, there are a set of rules that must be used to properly claim Wrathful Vengeance as yours.
1) When an offense has been given that you feel invokes the need for Wrathful Vengence, you must publically and vocally declare Wrathful Vengeance immediately, not several turns later when the offender is making a perfectly non-cockish move.
2) Wrathful Vengeance can only be invoked against one person in a game, unless two or more players were working in partnership to screw you utterly. The focus of your Wrathful Vengeance must now become your obsession. As your focus, it is your job to begin to screw him utterly until your honor has been restored. At this time Wrathful Vengeance may end. However if you continue the Wrathful Vengeance past the point of honor restored, you must be prepared to have it invoked on you by the reciever of your Wrathful Vengeance, as he will be well within his rights (the Death Spiral mentioned in the podcast).
3) When you declare the Wrathful Vengeance, you must bend all your effort to complete your Wrathful Vengeance, even at the expense of your own chances of winning. If you are going to lose the game, drag him down with you. However, the true practitioner of Wrathful Vengeance knows how to accomplish both his Wrathful Vengeance and win the game.
4) If you have failed to accomplish Wrathful Vengence, the Wrathful Vengeance may be carried over to the next game, and that game ONLY. It came be the same game or a different game, that doesn’t matter. It must be directed at the same person. Be wary, as this crossover carries a danger. Unless you remind the target of your Wrathful Vengeance once you have accomplished your Wrathful Vengeance of what he did to deserve it, he may chose to invoke the Wrathful Vengeance upon you.
Remember, Wrathful Vengeance is a philosophy, not a ideology. It is constantly evolving. Changes and new situations will force Wrathful Vengeance to evolve to new levels of understanding and application.
