Three Philosophers (#50)

UPDATE: So it turns out this was actually the 50th beer I reviewed (not counting Russ’ homebrew). Still a damn good beer.
Brewery: Brewery Ommegang (Moortgat), Cooperstown, NY
Brewery Description: “Cynics can’t believe it, Epicures hail it a sensation, and Pythagoreans just can’t add up what makes this luscious blend of rich malty ale and cherry [...]

So as a special treat this week, we have the first bottle of a home brew by a frequent visitor to Boston Geek, Russtopher. While you can’t buy this in stores, I wanted to put something up about it for him. I’ll post a commercially available beer on Friday per usual. Oh [...]

Carl’s Tech Tip #4

This one’s a bit more esoteric.  Have you ever been using Remote Desktop to access a Windows machine and noticed that there is no ‘Shut Down’ button on the Start menu?  What if you needed to restart the machine remotely?  What if a co-worker was pissing you off, and you wanted to give him what-for?
Enter one [...]

BostonGeek Podcast: Episode 49

Back from his honeymoon, Carl emerges from the atrophy produced by a week-long lack of tech to join his friend Colin in discussing Virgin Atlantic’s bizarre policies concerning laptop batteries, AT&T re-patriating jobs, and Apple’s baffling alienation of its loyal customer base. On the gaming table we discuss Guitar Hero and HD-DVD for the [...]

Thanks to some work by Jay Carreiro, we now have the original manuscript that began the codification of Wrathful Vengeance.
Read on, True Believers!!

Uerige Sticke (#49)

Brewery: Zum Uerige, Dusseldorf, Germany
Brewery Description: “Uerige Sticke can only be tasted twice a year: always on the third Tuesday in January and October. This beer is brewed with more malt and hops and is much richer than Uerige Alt. Behind the massive but elegant aroma are hidden [...]

Argh. ‘Tis a Day fer votin’.

‘Tis primary election day, aye. Cast yer ballots or be keelhauled.
An’ don’t ye ferget to talk like a Pirate… Arrrrggggggh.

Somehow combining politics and pirates just seems to make sense

A tasty morsel.

From Gourmetstation.com:
If you’ve ever forgot an anniversary, missed a meeting, forgot your
neighbor’s birthday, we think GourmetStation.com’s “Get Out of the Dog
House” video contest might strike a chord. GourmetStation.com is a company
that creates in-home dining experiences in four regional varieties –
Tuscan, Cajun, Parisian and Asian-Fusion – and is a great gift idea when
you’re in a tight [...]

I want this magic item

I was plugging around the Order of the Stick website and saw this comic, and felt compelled to put it up here. God I love this comic.

Brewery: Brauerei Heller-Trum, Bamburg, Germany

You already know how much I like my invisibleSHIELD for my (now old) 5G iPod. Well, if you were clicking the order button as Steve was turning off the RDF, you might be happy to hear that ShieldZone is already taking pre-orders on shields for your new purchase. And, they will be available for purchase [...]

This week’s math fact of the week is an interesting trigonometric identity involving the tangent function that I happened across the other day while reading the Polymathematics archives. Given a triangle with angles A, B, and C:

That’s a pretty neat identity! But how can we show it to be true? You can read a simple [...]

Philips 7FF1AW Digital Photo Display

It’s a fact that most people with digital cameras never print their photos to paper. It’s expensive to do, and inkjet technology has not reached the point where the colors stay vibrant and crisp on paper.
And yet, the technology to display photos has not really kept up with the technology to take the photos. Digital [...]

Carl’s Tech Tip #3

This tech tip hails from the deep halls of my mind, a dark place filled with horrors and twisted imaginings.
Have you ever noticed that sometimes you install a program on your PC, and it launches some part of itself when you first boot? Apple’s Quicktime, for example, loads the ‘qttask.exe’ process, even if you [...]

BostonGeek Podcast: Episode 48

On this post-apocalyptic episode, Carl is still recovering from a massive hangover. On the Techity-Toppity-Three, we discuss anonymity on the ‘net and child porn rings in Deutschland, Wikipedia’s stand against China’s ridiculous blackout on media, and Amazon’s new video service most foul. We devote our entire Gaming Table segment to Jungle Speed, probably [...]

Horny Devil (#47)

Brewery: Alesmith Brewing Company, San Diego, CA
Brewery Description: “This is the AleSmith incarnation of a Belgian Strong Ale. Horny Devil is an authentic Belgian Style ale, from the Belgian candi sugar right down to the yeast, a Belgian strain from a Trappist monastery in Belgium. In addition to the malts, candi sugar and fresh hops, [...]

Math Fact of the Week #2

Hello again, fellow math fans! Welcome again to another installment of math fact of the week. This week, we have our very first math joke of the week (I love a good math joke). I found this particular math joke while browsing the excellent MathWorld, a fantastic mathematics encyclopedia edited by Eric W. Weisstein. MathWorld [...]

Readers ask and GM delivers

So, it seems as though GM has fully embraced blogging, podcasting, vlogging, photo albums…etc. A recent entry on the GM blog indicates that they will be extending the warranty beginning in 2007. They state that this is, at least in part, due to feedback they received on the blog.  Cool, huh?

Carl’s Tech Tip #2

After the long weekend, I bring you a new tech tip.
You’ve just purchased a new Windows-based computer.  It’s shiny, it’s new, it’s pretty.  You spent several hundred (or over a thousand) dollars on it, and you’ve just unwrapped it.  You turn it on, and there are a dozen or so icons already ont he desktop.  [...]
