Recommended Glassware: Lager, Stein
The Ugly Truth: Although I occasionally complain about the narrow rules of the German Beer Purity Laws, they really are a beautiful thing at times. Kulmbacher Monchshof Schwarzbier is probably the best black lager I’ve had to date. Beautiful black color on the pour, solid head that was the perfect size. The taste was fantastic. Incredibly smooth on the onset without any bitterness, and the finish is equally enjoyable. The dark roasted malts really come through during the finish and there is also this subtle taste of either a coffee or chocolate flavor to it. This is a great beer, definitely one that everyone should try.
Verdict: Why is it so Black out, it’s only 9 out of 10 bottlecaps at night?
You’re going to publish a beer book right?
There are no plans as of yet for a book. However, there at one point was talk of a t-shirt with all the bottlecaps rating phrases written on the back. For those interested, I suggest petitioning the management about the possibilty.

Where in Massachusetts can you obtain Monchshof?
Try either a Whole Foods store or a Blanchard’s if you are in Boston.
