Brewery: De Proefbrouwerij, Lochristi, Belgium

Brewery Description: Website appeared to be under construction, but it is classified as a Belgian Strong Ale.

Brew Style: Belgian Strong Ale, 9.0% ABV

Recommended Glass: Trappist, Tulip, Tumbler

The Ugly Truth: So this was an interesting beer. The color was light golden, with a frothy white head to it on the pour. Either I was sloppy or it was the result of the fact that it was sold in a wine style bottle, but the first pour formed this gigantic head in the glass that I had to wait to go down. Apart from that, the aroma was nice, slightly fruity and light. The taste was completely unexpected, however. I’m not even sure exactly how to describe it. It was dry and crisp, with a sour after taste that was really enjoyable. Wild Ale is 9% ABV, but the flavors are so balanced that you can’t even really detect the higher alcohol content. There is a slight lemon taste to it, and some other subtle flavors that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. The sour taste was definitely the highlight for me, since it was so unexpected and was extremely enjoyable. I highly recommend going out and seeing if you can find this ale and give it a try.

Verdict: A flint spear-wielding 8 out of 10.

I’m from Belgium. Funny what Belgians are known for the most: beer and brussel sprouts…

Hey, there are worse things to be known for than beer…like brussel sprouts.
