Brewery: Brewery Weihenstephan, Freising, Germany

Brewery Description: “Nothing refreshes you more than this naturally cloudy wheat beer with its wonderful yeasty fragrance and taste. Goes well with dishes that do not have too intensive a flavour, especially that Bavarian speciality ‘Weisswurst’ or white sausage.”

Brew Style: Hefeweizen, 5.4% ABV

Recommended Glass: Weizen

The Ugly Truth: Okay so that description does nothing for this beer. This hefe-weiss was interesting, and had some tastes to it that are tough to describe. It was brewed under the German Purity Laws, so maybe that is the source of my dilemma. I love hefe-weiss, but for the most part they all kinda taste the same, with only subtle difference in the quality of that one taste. This was an eye opener for me as I never realized how different a hefe-weiss can taste. This was a really good beer. But for people who have never had a hefe-weiss brewed under those rules, I think it might throw you slightly. The aroma of the beer was definitely yeasty and I found the taste to be heavier than most hefe-weiss with a more carbonated and dry finish. It was a great beer and I recommend picking it up and trying it. It will be a new experience for some.

Verdict: I’m going to give it a 9 out 10, because of its cultural and educational value.
