So in response to a string of comments, I feel the need to post a link to an internet radio station that plays only punk music. This is so that the masses may educate themselves on the depth and range of emotions involved in this genre of music, as well as come to appreciate the talent of some of these individuals. So go to www.punkradiocast.com and start getting yourself some culture.
While I freely admit to making broad statements at times, I try to make sure I’ve given subject matters their due investigation before I do so. Sometimes I do justice to that claim, sometimes I don’t. I’m just a simple beer man, and therefore fallable.

However, I’m not wrong this time.

Um, your link is screwed up. Yeah.

So … what’s your favorite band lately anyway? I’m spending a lot of time listening to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs the last few days.

  2. 2 jcarreiro

Also your tag may be a bit presumptuous sir! :^)

  3. 3 Carl

No, see, you can’t be right when you are asserting your opinion. Opinions can’t be right, else they wouldn’t be opinions! :)

I posit that my assertion on Punk rock, while perhaps a too-wide generalization, is also more or less accurate, when considering my tastes and likes in music. There really isn’t any punk you can relax to. My challenge to point out a single album to chill to in the Punk genre stands.

Calling me uncultured for my dislike of the Punk genre as a whole is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black, from where I am standing. I could just as easily challenge you to name 5 classical composers without googling them. ;)

  4. 4 Big Remy

I pointed out 2 albums and one artist in the other thread.

    Bach
    Grieg
    Beethoven
    Brahms
    Vivaldi

Suck it bitch.  Bring the next challenge.

  5. 5 Big Remy

And I’m calling you uncultured for lack of ability to recognize that punk has as much depth as any other genre of music. I have no shadow of a doubt about myself that I am uncultured in the same regard to emo music, like One Eyed Stanley.

  6. 6 Carl

Grieg? I’m impressed. Also, without exception, you’ve picked composers I like. If you can understand their music, you understand my tastes perfectly.

You didn’t pick Mozart, who I equate with his era’s ‘Punk’, and who I also don’t listen to. :)

Chopin too. Czardas and Paganini are okay.

But I will check out these albums you posted on, and revise my opinion should the music successfuly move me. :)

  7. 7 Big Remy

    Fair enough.

  8. 8 Dave

Okay, this is a different article, so I can go back to arguing.

We’re calling you full of shit, actually, not uncultured. Well, I am. You started out with two basic statements. “I don’t like punk”, which nobody’s debating. “There’s no coherent sound, the vocals are always drowned out by the cymbals, and there’s no range of emotion” was the other. You’ve been given examples of bands, from your own list of groups you said you’d listened to, that disproved every single one of those assertions.

Since then, you’ve tried to change your argument to “there’s no punk album I can chill to”. We’ve provided several examples of mellow, melodic albums that would be suitable if your initial “I don’t like punk” wasn’t getting in your way.

All your claims of hypocrisy and “well, you don’t know classical composers, so your examples disproving all of my assertions are invalid” are really sort of moot.

  9. 9 Big Remy

    Yeeeeeeeahhhh Boyyyyyyyyy!!!

  10. 10 Carl

Que? Well, I still stand by my original statement that to me the sound is incoherent. I thought the whole inability to chill to it was a good way of pointing that out. But, meh, whatever.

I never called anyone a hypocrite, and I only challenged Remy to name classical composers because he called me uncultured. :)

  11. 11 Carl

By the way guys, this is a Blog, not a Forum. :) We probably shouldn’t shit on it with any more articles on the unwashed masses, especialy if said article is posted just to start a bitchfest. :) You know Colin is just going to delete it or relegate it to some far-flung corner.

  12. 12 Dave

Ah, but according to your logic

Are you high? Where did I say you were an ignorant fool?

Oh, I see, you’ve created the link by association. I say it takes a fool not to e chilled, you aren’t chilled, hence I must be calling you a fool… That’s still putting words in my mouth.

Remy never actually called you uncultured, did he?

Also, you’re claiming that saying that we’re like the pot calling the kettle black isn’t the same as saying we’re being hypocritical?

  13. 13 Carl

At least we got some action going on the blog. :) Several articles, rants, condescending remarks. Our little blog is growing up… *sniff*

  14. 14 Big Remy

No he’s right I did refer to him as uncultured at one point.

But he is right, we shouldn’t be using this a bitch fest platform, so I’ll just drop it now.

  15. 15 Big Remy

But I will start using that tag on every post I make from now on.

  16. 16 jcarreiro

Oh! No! It’s a blog people, not a forum — what the hell are you doing posting things and making comments?

Oh wait, that’s right, the entire point of a blog is to post things and make comments. Hell, I say that if Carl can post drivel like his Boot Camp screed, then Remy should be able to “shit on it with any more articles on the unwashed masses”.

What the fuck was that even supposed to mean, Carl? Or would you rather just dodge that question too?

(And yeah, I agree with Dave: if you don’t like punk, that’s great, whatever; but if you go out of your way to criticize the entire genre for its compositional ability, then you’d better be ready to back your opinion up with some facts.)

  17. 17 Carl

My ‘Boot Camp Screed,’ as you call it, was a direct response to several articles posted on several blogs whre people were beginning to get up in arms over the instability of Boot Camp. It was Geek, and it was relevant.

If Remy had posted an article on the subject of Punk, that would be awesome. Posting a post just to criticize someone isn’t, as Colin and all of you have in fact taken great pains to remind me of. Remy’s link is great, and belongs here, chastising my ‘broad statements’ in the ‘article’ sort of ‘breaks the fourth wall’.

And I don’t have to ‘back up my opinion’ of Punk, as the genre stands and speaks for itself. An awful lot of the music sounds alike, and if you are unwilling to admit that, don’t blame me for it. I never said most pop was any better, but I don’t listen to Avril, Britney, or ‘X-tina’ either, and this started as a discussion about Punk, not Pop.

  18. 18 jcarreiro

Damn, there a lot of single quote characters in that last comment. It ’sort of’ ‘broke my’ ‘ability’ ‘to read’ ‘it’.

I don’t have to ‘back up my opinion’ of Punk, as the genre stands and speaks for itself
Is this your way of saying that you don’t actually have any facts that you can use to defend your “opinion” that all Punk music lacks a “RANGE of emotion”? Or are you just going to fall back on your perennial argument that opinions can’t be invalidated regardless of the claims they make or what the actual facts of the matter are?

  19. 19 jcarreiro

Errr, that was a quote from Carl:

I don’t have to ‘back up my opinion’ of Punk, as the genre stands and speaks for itself

    Stupid markup.

  20. 20 Colin

Dude, I tried your link Remy… the first song being played was “The Postal Service - The District Sleeps Tonight.” Its a good tune (and a great album), but definitely not punk. I hate the radio…and apparently that includes crappy internet radio stations as well now.

  21. 21 Big Remy

There are many subtle levels of punk. Trust me.

  22. 22 Colin

That is cool and all, but seriously, The Postal Service isn’t punk… unless punk now includes tragically hip indie-rock bands. Hrm,does this go even further? Is Yanni punk? How about Fifty Cent?

  23. 23 jcarreiro

Ben Gibbard is punk too! Honest. I heard his band on this internet punk radio thing-ie! :^)

  24. 24 Big Remy

I swear if you keep it up I will post nude photos of midgets. Don’t tempt me.
