Which isn’t the same as One-Eyed Willie from the classic family film The Goonies, or my one-eyed trouser snake.
One Eyed Stanley is the name of a local band from Newton. Yes, I know there are a lot of local Boston-area bands, and yes, I know you expect more from me than that. Keep your pants on. For the love of all that is holy, keep your pants on. Unless you’re a cute girl… but I digress.
I was recently contacted by bandmember Adam Schatz, who indicated One Eyed Stanley would be performing at TT The Bears in Central Square on Thursday, April 27th. He also sent me a link where I could sample some of their musical stylings. Yes, I’ll share the link with you, but it’s at the end, so you’ll hopefully read the whole post. Nyah.
I gave them a listen, and although they list Elvis Costello and Alice in Chains as musical influences, I also felt satisfied by the uniqueness of their sound. They classify themselves as ‘Indie/Pop/Rock’, but that doesn’t really convey the tone of their work. I got a great dose of jazz, a little swing, and even some reggae as I listened to Few and Far Between and The Time. Their music has an upbeat, energetic sound that doesn’t feel angry, depressed, or preachy (hard to find in this day and age), and I found myself really enjoying it. I’m hoping to check out the show, and you should too.
One Eyed Stanley, at TT The Bears in Central Square on Thursday, April 27th. Admission’s $8 and it’s an 18+ show. How can you go wrong?
Not to be harsh, but all I could think of was Billy Joel and the Strokes had a love child. Not my kind of music.
I think I agree with Remy (about music, which is just a bit scary…)
Yeah, same here. Not really my bag.
I thought more The Police. And I liked them. Not all music can evoke feelings of breaking someone’s head open with a beer stein.
No, that’s exactly the feeling it evoked, actually.
If I was like, breaking open my own head so that I didn’t have to listen to them anymore, then yes — that’s exactly the feeling I got listening to their music.
Yes, well, we can’t all make Music to Have a Soccer Riot By, now can we?
Do I need to put the youtube link to the hippie jam band episode of south park up here before you understand the damage you can do listening to music like this?
You probably skipped Butthole Surfers, 311, Nada Surf, Seven Mary Three, Alice in Chains, Offspring, Godsmack, Creed, and everything else that was really popular from about 1994-current, huh?
I happen to like that music. If it brings about the Apocalypse, so be it.
Um, I don’t even know where to begin responding to that one.
Let’s start with the easy stuff. 311 sucks, as does Creed.
But seriously, what possibly could bring you to not only come up with that group of bands, but to include Stanley with them? AiC was a grunge band, Godsmack a hardcore band, Offspring a punk band. Did you pick them out of a hat or something?
Also, you do know Creed are a christian rock band, right?
All those bands suck ass with the exception of Alice in Chains. Creed? You have to be kidding me. Godsmack?!? What’s next on the list, Chumbawumba?!?!
Ahem.
Anyway, if you’re going to trash “punk” music in the other thread while rattling off a list with 311 and Creed on it, then I for one am sure that I’m listening to the right stuff. :^)
Remember, Carl owns Enya albums. Actually, knowing him, I should probably say he has Enya albums, but you get my point.
I originally started listening to Creed because back in the day it went around that they were doing it to ’spite’ the Christian Right. Only later did I find out that they actually were a Christian rock band.
But, meh… I listen to Gregorian chant and church choir music too. Greater glory of god…they can have it. But the music is pretty good.
You yourself have said Offspring could only be called ‘Punk’ in the loosest sense, once before. Do you reverse that position? You called them ‘mainstream sellouts,’ iirc.
And Godsmack… harcore? Heh. Hardcore like Vanilla Ice, maybe. Good music, but I don’t get ‘hardcore’ from listening to their stuff.
And yes, I have Enya albums. Loreena McKennit, too.
You’re confusing my arguments with J’s, actually. I never said anything of the sort about Offspring. And I don’t think anyone but the most ardent scenester would seriously try to argue that they belong in the pop bucket, not the punk bucket.
As for Godsmack, well, when we’re getting down to subgenres, which hardcore is, you’re going to see a lot of disagreement. I’m happy to slot them into the Rock category if it makes you feel better.
Awaiting moderation? Carl? Did you go and lock this thread or something?
Hmm…apparently not…so what the hell triggered the moderation? Bizaah.
Dunno, dude. I haven’t touched the threads at all.
Offspring left Epitaph to join Columbia on some flismy pretense about insurance (yeah, right — thx for kick-starting my memory, Wikipedia). Fucking sell-outs work for Sony/BMG these days. I hope the money is good!
I’ve never heard their 7″ stuff since I first heard of them from Smash, so for me at least, they went from Epitaph to being splashed all over MTV faster than anything. That’s why I’m callin’ them sell-outs. BECAUSE THEY DONE SOLD OUT BOY!
Anyway, I bet their 7″ stuff kicks ass. They were part of that same early 80’s SoCal scene where Social D and a lot of other good bands got started.
Actually, I’ve been told the 7″ stuff is rather good.
Funny, I was usually told that they were happy to finally have something bigger than 7″.
Just gave them a listen, and I like ‘em. :-/
You like the idea of watching Billy Joel procreating with the Strokes? Sick man.
a lot of our newer stuff is more ecceltic in sound, less straight ahead pop, definitely not straight ahead jammy. If you’re into any pop at all i think you’d love the show but if not no worries, all valid opinions. bigups to Carl for the promo.
-Adam
apologies for the bashing, but we were good until carl provoked us…
Carl brings out the worst in some.
But, ya, like I said, I liked what I have heard thus far.
Yeah I wasn’t trying to bash, its just not my style of music. I do hope you guys pull a good crowd and get noticed. Good luck with the show.
haha thanks. no worries, even if you were bashing. i myself bash and heavily endorse bashing bands/sounds I don’t like. who am I to censor.
