Eye of the Hawk (#4)

Eye of the Hawk BeerBrewery: Mendocino Brewing Company, Ukiah, CA

Brewery Description: “Eye of the Hawk Select Ale is coppery amber in color and characterized by a luxurious caramel malt flavor, a substantial mouth-feel and a slightly warming yet dry finish”

Brew Style: American Strong Ale, 8% ABV

Recommended Glass: Trappist

The Ugly Truth: This ale is a prime example of why you should use beer reviews- even mine- only as guides to choosing your beer, but ultimately always trust your instincts. When I bought this I must have gotten a bad six pack or something, because everywhere I look to see what other beer drinkers such as myself think about Eye of the Hawk I see nothing but praise. However, in my taste, this stuff was one of the worst beers I have ever had. This beer, for me at least, definately falls into the ranks of a Brew of Death. My only agreement with the brewery description is that it is coppery amber in color. This beer is a 8% ABV (alcohol by volume), but frankly I think I’d rather drink straight rubbing alcohol because it would taste better. There was a substantial mouth-feel and slightly warming finish, which I attributed to my taste buds dying en masse from the truly terrible, terrible taste of this stuff. My advice is to avoid this beer like you would the clap, or a Beholder monster, depending on your particular level of social interaction.

Verdict: A paltry, divinity slapping 1 out of 10.

You seriously did not do a “Ahhkkk Ahhkkk, the hawk is coming” :-)

Difference of opinion here. I thought it tasted like hell, you obviously didn’t. That’s all. Of course, this was so long ago and my tastes have changed that I might actually like it now. That might be an interesting exercise to try, grab 5 of my least favorite beers from when I first started this and try them again.
