XP and OSX in harmonyLooks like Larry Hryb, a.k.a. Major Nelson, has decided his next laptop will be Apple’s MacBook Pro. Why would a sergeant an officer in the Microsoft Army state this publicly on his blog? Well, simple, he now has the option to run Windows XP on his MacBook Pro. In fact, Apple has released into public beta an application that they are referring to as Boot Camp which makes the process of dual-booting much simpler than was initially thought. No need to hack your EFI or make do with sketchy driver support. The Apple solution appears to be simple, elegant, and offer support for graphics. Some have reported that games, such as Half Life 2, run well on the Intel-based Macs. Could this open the floodgates for users who had been tied to a single application used at work? I am not sure about that, I am still waiting to see what sort of virtualization solutions become available. Booting in and out of an OS to access an application can be a pain. However, this should help pursuade some to take a leap of faith and give Mac (and OSX) a shot.

Update:  Here is a Flickr set of the install process on a MacBook Pro.

I’ve used both MacOS and Windows for work, and I honeslty don’t know which one is worse. I’m pretty much of the opinion they both suck.

You know, it probably wasn’t the OS that you didn’t particularly like, but the specific applications that you were using.

No, it was the OS in general since I’ve used a number of different apps on both.

Probably “can of worms”, but what in particular did you not like about each OS?

I’ve gotten used to Windows XP now, but I hate the way it tries to go out its way to be more “streamlined and useful” when its actually more annoying to me at least. As for MacOS, I have the worst time trying to find anything using the menu on that OS. That may be just inexperience, but I’ve always found trying to find any system control menus or control programs a complete bitch. I’m not really qualifed to judge these things since I’m just a casual user, but I’ve just never like Macs and I’m more and more hating Windows. Makes me wish I had gone and followed through with my plan as an undergrad and done a double major of Bio and Computer Sci.
