This episode starts off a little discombobulated as Colin tries to cope without internet access. On the Tech Top 3 we discuss iTunes television show subscriptions, no EFI support in the 32-bit versions of Windows Vista, and Microsoft’s Origami. On the Gaming Table we mention the upcoming free XBOX Live Gold Weekend, review Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter, mention a couple of available free demos available through Live, and discuss the supposed ‘heatfoil issue’ and the XBOX 360. Finally, on Boston in Brief, we talk about St. Patrick’s Day and all the fun to ensue in and around Boston.

What, no mention of the five day Dropkick Murphys concert that has come to define part of St. Patty’s in Boston?
Right, like there are tickets left for that…
Still deserves to be mentioned. Kelly told me that we’re going to try and fly me up for it next year for my birthday.
Will you be flying up on magical winged ponies?
I suggest using some of the amazon booty on this to get Carl to quit singing. Seriously.
Oldest continually operating public secondary school. (ie. not grammar school)
And those limey-loving tory roxbury fucks can take their nitpick and shove it where the sun don’t shine.
Yes, there may be magical ponies involved
Multi-Pass! Leeloo Dallas Multi-Pass!
That alone is reason to get one.
Just clearing up some of the EFI confusion. I know you guys would have gotten some of this had your net access been working.
Nobody sells stock intel/amd boards with EFI on them. Although I just did a quick google and the wikipedia claims that any mobo with an Intel 945 chipset on it can support it, none of them ship with it. Oh, and that Gateway shipped an HTPC with it on an Intel board. Overclockers has some more details.
I doubt they’ve got Itaniums, but AMD has been selling a shitload of 64-bit processors lately. Not huge “Bob Q Public” penetration, I’m sure, but it’s probably not insignificant.
The BIOS compatibility mode will only exist if the developer of the mobo/firmware adds it in, which Apple/Intel haven’t.
The UMPCs are basically MS’s attempt to make a Newton. That is all.
If I had an intact net connection, I would have tried my darndest to include that soundclip in the podcast.
I thought it was “John Q Public”?
Nah. Bob sucker-punched him and took his spot.
Bob’s a bad mutherfucka
Also, yes, battery life on the umpcs is confirmed to suck, coming in anywhere from 2-4 hours, depending on the model and the like. But honestly, you can’t really expect much more, shy of them cramming a proportionally larger battery into it. It’s still powering an lcd, a hard drive, a ghz cpu, etc., just like your average laptop.
Re: Frag Dolls.
Google “frag dolls”. First result points to their page. The snippet? “A team of girl gamers put together and sponsored by Ubisoft.”
Looking on their site, it seems they’ve had other people asking questions about their connection to Ubisoft, and have responded.
Also, more linky love. Wikipedia has a decent explanation of Evacuation Day.
And yeah, there’s a traditional pancake breakfast in Southie every year.
Also, Southie is perfectly safe as long as you’re white.
And I can’t remember exactly what was said, but there’s a difference between Southie and the South End. Southie is South Boston, not the South End.
Or at least that’s what I’ve always been told by friends who live in one or the other.
No, they had it right. No mention of South End, only South Boston.
For the record:
Southie == South Boston
Eastie == East Boston
Westie == White Roxbury == West Roxbury
“White Roxbury”?
Episode 22? I think you folks should switch over to a Volume X Episode Y model and use roman numerals. Or if you want to be REAL GEEKY you could write it in hex!
I Tivoed a KFC commerical and went through it frame by frame until I found a frame that said go to kfc.com and type in buffalo to get a free buffalo chicken snacker. Not bad but not much of a deal if you dont live near a KFC.
Nice! Thanks for sharing… too bad the promotion ended on March 3rd. They still have a version of the commercial with the code frames in it on the KFC site that you can look at, though, for those that are curious.
Just noticed Bostonist had a good explanation of Evactuation Day, complete with links to maps and the like.
