It might be coincidence, but around the same time that a Cableguy was at my apartment building (presumably) installing cable for the folks who just bought the condo below mine my high-speed ‘net access died. In fact, I am connected right now, writing this entry, via bluetooth DUN thanks to my Treo 650… and it hurts. This is precisely the reason why the podcast has yet to be recorded. We will, however, record tonight. And, if Carl can bear to stay at my place while I do the post-production editing and burn the episode to CD-R, he will be able to upload it to the site sometime this evening. But, we all know that things rarely go smoothly, so I wouldn’t hold my breath. And, until Wednesday when the cableguy is meant to fix my ‘net access, I will be either connected via super-slow dialup, or at my local coffeeshop leeching free wi-fi.
Times like these show us just how addicted we are to some things.
I say ‘addicted’, and not ‘dependent’, because a scant ten years ago internet access was still largely unheard of. We could, I suppose, survive without.
But I have no doubt I’d feel somewhat lost without internet access as well. I’ve had my cable drop (thankfully very rarely) and I can tell you, the panic is almost debilitating.
Buck up, chum. Hopefully they’ll restore you soon.
Not likely to happen before Wednesday since that is the first they are able to get someone out here to repair what the last dimwit did. It isn’t all that bad, except, there are certain things I require a net connection for… the podcast, the blog, etc. I mean, on the plus side, I should be able to get some reading done that I have been postponing.
Yeah, and as Colin mentioned over the weekend, it _really_ sucks when your phone company is Vonage.
I couldn’t remember if it auto-forwards calls when your ‘net access goes down (I believe it does), but I was able to connect with my Treo and tell it to forward my calls to the cell phone. Still, yar, it sucks. But, for the huge savings in telephone bill I guess I have to put up with it.
I have no landline. No vonage… heh, no phone bill of my own at all.
Yeah, I’m pretty sure it will auto-forward to whatever “backup” number you have listed in your account whenever the server loses contact with the ATA.
Just keep buying that Emack and Bolio’s so you can rape their WiFi.
Ugh… I am cursed. I was sitting in Emacks enjoying my coffee and free wifi and then they LOSE POWER! Back to bluetooth DUN.
