Just last week, I was fortunate enough to get tickets to the Boston Bruins opening night game against the much-hated Montreal Canadiens (thanks dave). I hadn’t been to a hockey game in a couple years, and I haven’t seriously watched hockey since I was in high-school (and was actually quite the fan of Patrick Roy and the aforementioned hockey team from Montreal). I had truly forgotten how exciting a game it is.
The main thing that sets hockey apart from other American sports like Baseball and Football is speed. Hockey is a much faster game. I guess the thing that I find most appealing about it is the fact that there are many tense moments in the game. In fact, as long as the score is close (which is often the case) the tension seems to be a constant for each of the three 20-minute periods. While watching a game, I find myself constantly vocalizing… like: “Ohhhhh!” “C’mon!” “Damn!” and “Whooo!”. Again, those moments come much less often in sports like football and baseball. With the new rules in hockey that are meant to make the game more exciting (read: more offense), these moments are sure to become even more exciting.
And, unlike with my local baseball and football teams, tickets aren’t impossible to come by. So, it looks like I shall be seeing a few more hockey games over the course of this season.
Go Bruins!
