Popped my cherry.

Umber HulkWell, it had to happen. And, I guess I kinda felt that it would probably happen during a Monte Cook adventure. You see, I just lost my first character to a giant Umber Hulk.

Camby Underhand died a valiant death. Well, actually, since he was under the guise of a confusion spell, it wasn’t valiant at all. In fact, at the time of his violent death, he was babbling incoherently. But, I guess it is best this way. While being chewed and chomped on by the giant thing, he had no idea what was going on.

But, the real kicker is that at the time of his demise, Camby was just a paltry 50 XP from reaching level 7. The way that character death works is that the character who dies still receives an XP award for the encounter in which they died. This is perfectly just as the character did participate in the encounter. In this case, Camby was able to deal some damage with his sling before becoming a useless, confused halfling. Thus, Camby deserves the 650 XP for the encounter. However, the rules also state that the XP award, if the character is raised, is given after raising. The funniest bit here is that the process of raising a character reduces him or her 1 character level. In Camby’s case, he becomes level 5. So, for a first death, it really couldn’t get any worse.

I guess I know how to die in style.
